Layton Breaks Ground on College of Dental Medicine for University of Southern Nevada
Ground was broken last week on a 125,000-square-foot, five-story building to house the University of Southern Nevada's (USN) College of Dental Medicine at the university's South Jordan, Utah campus, located in the RiverPark Corporate Center. Layton Construction Co., Inc. is constructing the new facility, which was designed by MHTN Architects, in conjunction with The Argent Group.
"After years of planning and preparation, USN is pleased to begin construction of our College of Dental Medicine building and bring the first pre-doctoral dental program to Utah," Dr. Harry Rosenberg, USN president, said. "The university looks forward to providing an unparalleled learning experience while also offering excellent and affordable, high-quality dental care to citizens of the Salt Lake Valley, including under served populations."
The new building will contain classrooms, labs, offices and clinical facilities. The College of Dental Medicine's planned Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) program will be the first and only pre-doctoral dental program in Utah and is expected to enroll its first class in the fall of 2011. The innovative program has a unique curriculum based on USN's student-centered educational philosophies of mastery learning and outcomes-based education. USN utilizes the block system--rather than having multiple courses and clinical experiences spread out over semesters or quarters, "the curriculum is organized into blocks that allow students to focus on one subject at a time," Rosenberg said.
Layton completed USN's current 119,000-square-foot South Jordan campus that houses the College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy and MBA programs in 2006. The facility features several classrooms, a board room, a student commons area and four six-sided JumboTron-like projector pods and fixed seating. The new building for the College of Dental Medicine will be constructed adjacent to the existing campus.
