Groundbreaking Held for Meldrum Civil Engineering Building

Layton broke ground yesterday on the Meldrum Civil Engineering Building at the University of Utah, a 14,000-square-foot expansion to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering's Energy and Minerals Research Lab. The facility will provide a new administrative home for the department as well as faculty offices, student activity space and capstone design studios. Construction is expected to be complete in the summer of 2010, just in time for the start of the fall 2010 semester.

The expanded building will officially be named "The Floyd and Jeri Meldrum Civil and Environmental Engineering Building" in recognition of the Meldrum's total donations to the University which now exceed $3.5 million, including a $3.3 million lead gift to the civil and environmental engineering department in January 2008. Floyd Meldrum received his Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the U. in 1962. He and his wife Jeri are the founders of Southern Nevada Paving, an aggregate, asphalt and contracting business based in Las Vegas, which they operated for more than 40 years prior to its sale in 2003. He credits the education he received at the University of Utah to his professional success.

Layton is no stranger to working on the University of Utah campus, as crews recently completed the University Hospital exansion, and recently started work on the James L. Sorenson Molecular Biotechnology Building - a USTAR Innovation Center, set for completion in the fall of 2011. Layton's past project on the U's campus include Rice-Eccles Stadium, the John A. Moran Eye Center II, Huntsman Cancer Hospital, Orthopaedic Center, Museum of Fine Arts and an expansion to the University Hospital's helipad and parking structure.
