cancer treatment in a modern, luxurious surrounding. Nestled into the surrounding hills and featuring large windows and high-end finishes, the hospital is designed to feel more like a resort than a cancer treatment center.
The hospital also features an extensive research facility where new treatments are tested. Sensitive diagnostic, detection and treatment equipment is located in the facility, which was designed to minimize vibrations to equipment areas.

The hospital is the second phase of the Huntsman campus. Meticulous efforts were made to seamlessly blend the two facilities. Sky bridges connect the buildings on floors two and six.

The building itself was constructed on a small and difficult site, requiring excavation of 100,000 cubic yards of rock and soils. During construction, slope stabilization became a problem. The building’s one-hundred foot walls were stabilized using a combination of reinforced piles, concrete and a rock anchoring system.

The building contains 25,000 cubic yards of concrete. Two of the main concrete features are the seven-story single-core multi-function concrete shear-wall system and the five-room linear accelerator corridor with concrete floors and walls up to four feet thick to contain the radiation treatment administered in the rooms. The facility was also designed and constructed to meet Zone 4+ seismic standards, more than required by Utah building codes.

Some of the hospital’s unique features include the following:

• Five concrete linear accelerator vaults for cancer radiation treatment
• Utah's only Cyclotron, located within a 4-ft thick concrete containment area, which produces radioactive isotopes with a half-life of just a few minutes for nuclear medical treatment that are transported by a unique pneumatic tube system
• 50 private inpatient beds and 32 outpatient rooms
• Four operating rooms with shelled space for four more
• Technology highlights include digital mammography, stereotactic radiosurgery (Novalis) and a combined PET/CT
