Layton completed the entire Rice Eccles Stadium in 15 months, half the time as similar stadium projects, impressing universities and colleges across the country and meeting the university’s goal of not missing a single football game.
Planners estimated the project would take three years to complete in phases. However, the total project time decreased significantly when both the designing and constructing were completed in one phase.
Layton continuously poured two 177-foot concrete towers -- which support the press boxes, suites and west side of the stadium -- 24 hours a day for seven days using a slip forming process. Workers used wheel barrows to fill every cubic yard of the towers, which grew one inch every five minutes (12 to 14 inches per hour). The tight timeline of the project was compounded with demolition taking place just nine months before completion.
The Rice Eccles Stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2002 Winter Olympics. |
