The Micron Technologies Plant was one of the largest construction projects in the continental United States in 1995. Cost estimates of this state-of-the- art plant reached $2.5 billion. The fast track, design-build project required only the best and most experienced construction teams.

Layton was awarded the crucial components of the project: the Central Utilities Plant, Water Purity and Water Treatment Plant and Cooling Towers, as well as the spine tunnels that feed all other buildings -- the backbone of the project. The mechanical scope of work included approximately 15 miles of numerous types of piping, the feed and return from the Central Utilities Plant and Water Treatment buildings to the Fab, Test and Probe, Assembly and Administration buildings. Layton also managed the installation of several miles of stainless steel, high purity process piping.

Layton installed large equipment using rigging and millwright employees and 21 cranes ranging in capacity of 10 tons to 300 tons. Operating with a 24-hour schedule, equipment was placed safely with no reportable accidents.

The magnitude and pace of this 24-hour-a-day project required knowledgeable and experienced management with a can-do attitude. Layton’s team performed the task right and on time with over 400 Layton employees and subcontractors.
